I revealed myself to be an engine n00b in my post !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! yesterday.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This community was super helpful, pleasant, and above all, encouraging. You guys seemed to dig that I was really truly interested, and all seemed to want to foster that interest. Very, very cool, folks.
I want you all to know that after reading your replies, I went outside and gazed at my engine bay affectionately for about 25 minutes, marveling at all the new parts that I understood, remembering your explanations, and grinning like an idiot.
Thanks, Oppo.
Here's a B5 S4 Avant for your time.

Yay, I helped!
But yeah, from what I can tell, this place is pretty welcoming and comfortable. No one really gets bent out of shape, which is awesome. It is hard to come across a place like this.

'sall good. I didn't get my license until I was 19. I knew everything about cars except how to drive them. Lulz.

Thank YOU for posting in the first place. I learned a lot.

Frickin awesome thread there. I'm even more of an engine noob to be honest so I may or may not go back and read that again and again.
I've loved motors for a long time and tried to buy a go-kart when I was 12 so I could tool around on it and learn but my dad squashed that idea. After that I never really had a chance to play around and let my love of this stuff kind of fly under the radar.
Then I got authorship on Oppo last year and I've been learning like crazy. I rarely have much to contribute in actual content outside of my rants but I love this community. Can't wait to be able to afford a project (need a place to do such a thing, too). I want to get my butt into some sort of auto industry job...too bad I didn't study to be an engineer (should have).

You need to check out the Engineering Explained channel on youtube. It is all about how cars work from the various parts of the engine to the transmission to the suspension to the aero dynamics and even things like how power to weight actually affects the way a car drives and HP vs Torque.
You could spend days watching all the video this guy has done.

I just saw that thread/post, and you know what, it never occured to me that perhaps some people on oppo DON'T have an extensive knowledge about the mechanical bits in a car. That's my bad. I grew up with a dad who's a massive gear head, so I've always been tinkering with bits and bobs related to cars.
I'm really happy that so many answered you in a nice way :) Hope you learned tons of stuff.

I'm with you all the way. The encouraging thing is, if you want something, all you have to do is prioritize it.
Prioritize it over what? Well, maybe just over the fear of feeling silly for asking. Maybe over the fear of not knowing where to start. Maybe over other financial things, like vacations or a few steak dinners.
I dunno, I'm an optimist with some of the same regrets as you. Maybe I'm writing this for myself as much as for you. Any way, I'm glad you benefited from the info in that thread as much as I did.

My project WILL happen...it's just a matter of time. Everyone who knows me is aware of this as I have been saying it since I was, well, about 12.
I am hopeful for the future and what it brings, be it through Oppo or first hand experience.

I did, and no one made me regret asking.
Funny, my love of cars started with my dad, but he was NOT a gearhead. He just loved cars. Loved going fast. Loved what cars represented. Loved how woven into the fabric of the American experience they are. That's what rubbed off on me. I'm just now beginning to develop an interest in learning the actual mechanics.

Cool :) Just a tip, if you want to learn, buy some old crapcan and try to fix it (if you have somewhere to work on it that is), that's mostly how I learned.

I'm in the exact same boat. There's more of us than we think!
